You can help solve a major problem that exists today:
the shortage of American Indian and Alaska Native healthcare professionals.

As you are aware, American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities suffer health disparities disproportionately compared to other Americans. For example, American Indian death rates are 400-700 percent higher for diabetes, tuberculosis, and other chronic diseases. Further, American Indians have the lowest life expectancies in the U.S. or any nation in the Western Hemisphere except Haiti. These disparities are clearly visible when one takes into account the health care services provided to the AI/AN community. In AI/AN communities there is one physician to 1,742 individuals compared to one physician to 265 individuals in the U.S. as a whole. Furthermore, there is an estimated vacancy rate for qualified healthcare professionals as high as 32% in AI/AN communities.

One approach that has demonstrated success in improving the health and well-being of AI/AN individuals is to increase the number of AI/AN health providers. Pathways Into Health is a grassroots collaboration of more than 200 individuals and organizations dedicated to improving the health, health care and health care education of American Indians and Alaska Natives in this country. By combining the expertise, resources, and strength of Tribes and AI/AN organizations, tribal colleges, prominent universities, the Indian Health Service and American Indian and Alaska Native communities as we work together to solve a major problem that exists today: the shortage of AI/AN healthcare professionals.

On September 9-10th, the Pathways consortium will convene Achieving Excellence, Harmony and Balance: Transforming health professions education in American Indian and Alaska Native communities at the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, Alaska. The purpose of this conference is to bring together a diverse group of individuals including academics/educators, health care providers (physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, community health workers, etc...), health facility administrators, public health officials, policy-makers, Elders and students to contribute to the development of appropriate and effective educational methodologies for primarily distance based AI/AN health professions education.

Three core concepts will be illuminated to advance this process including:
1) Cultural Attunement,
2) Interprofessional Education, and
3) Distance Learning /Telehealth technologies.

We are asking for your support to ensure the success of this conference. There are opportunities to sponsor a meal, break, cultural events, or even handout items for conference participants.
